If you are currently living in Hong Kong and are looking to move, or are planning to move to the city from elsewhere, you may have done some research into the various districts and are now wondering which one may be the right place for you to call home. Whether you are planning to stay for a matter of months or years, you’ll find that the district or neighbourhood you choose can have a very strong influence on your experience of living and renting in the city. The biggest decision you’ll have to make as a renter is whether you want to choose the mainland or want to look for something on Hong Kong Island.

Both locations are filled with unique neighbourhoods and each has its pros and cons. It all depends on what you are looking for in terms of location and lifestyle, and whether you need to be close to a particular place of work or school. Some areas are more popular than others when it comes to young individuals, couples, and families with young children. There are many to choose from but these are just some of the most popular among the younger demographic.

Mid-Levels

Essentially three districts in one, Mid-Levels is made up of Mid-Levels East, Mid-Levels West, and Mid-Levels Central. Mid-Levels Central offers spacious apartments that have plenty of room for young families and couples who are thinking of starting their own family soon. The apartments and complexes in this area are packed with amenities so you’ll have everything you need in close proximity.

Mid-Levels East tends to be another great choice for families who need a bit more room, and it is close to plenty of open space due to the nearby Hong Kong park. Furthermore, this area is close to several of the area’s best international schools. On the other hand, Mid-Levels West is closer to the Central Business District, Lan Kwai Fong and Soho so it attracts young working professionals.

Southside

With far reaching views over the South China Sea, Southside is home to some of the most high end districts in Hong Kong. The area is blessed with gorgeous beaches and nearby access to Tai Tam Country Park. The most popular neighbourhoods in Southside include Deepwater Bay, Repulse Bay, Tai Tam, Big Wave Bay and Shouson HIll which have some of the best Hong Kong homes you can rent or buy.

Kennedy Town

Just outside of Central you can find Kennedy Town which is a pleasant, up and coming suburb which attracts plenty of young people and families. It has managed to retain its ‘waterside community’ atmosphere, and as such you will be spoiled for choice if you like seafood. If you prefer something a bit more upmarket than street seafood sellers, the area also has an excellent array of restaurants.

The Peak

One of Hong Kong’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, The Peak is home to many different types of properties including apartments, complexes and standalone homes. It is in close proximity to Victoria Peak for which it is named, as such there are lots of wonderful hiking trails nearby for the more adventurous types.

Due to its geographical location, The Peak treats its residents and visitors to a cooling breeze, particularly in the evening, which makes it a wonderful place to sit outside for dinner in the later hours of the day. This is a welcome aspect since you can find the Peak Galleria retail centre here, and plenty of places to enjoy a later dinner.

Discovery Bay

One of the first things you will notice about this place is that there are no cars present. In Discovery Bay, most people will get about on foot, by bicycle, or will use ferries and golf carts to get about. The fact that cars are banned here makes it especially popular for families with children.

Though it is a little more out of the way than other districts and there are no cabs or cars allowed, the area is still well connected. You are only a 30 minute ferry away from Central, or you can get a connecting bus to Tung Chung that will get you onto the MTR directly to the Central Business District which is an ideal commute.
